Course Overview:

Adobe InDesign allows you to design and produce stunning documents on your desktop printer or using a professional printer. Or convert your documents to PDF format or publish them on a website. This class will walk you through setting up the InDesign workspace, adding text and graphics to your document, creating layouts with frames and applying formatting with styles.

This course prepares a student to take the Adobe Print & digital media publication using Adobe InDesign certification exam.

Students will need a copy of the Adobe InDesign CC software in order to do coursework.

Students will:
  • explore the InDesign environment and edit a basic document
  • create a page layout and add and format objects.
  • add and edit text in multiple blocks
  • add color, tints and gradients to objects in their documents and manage the color settings.
  • apply style formatting to text and objects.
  • will modify graphics and add tables to their documents
  • apply tranparency formatting and print documents
  • create forms and ebooks
  • add a table of contents and index to a document
  • create a final project using concepts learned in this course

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Introducing the Workspace

This lesson will help you become familiar with InDesign, the workspace, tools, and additional resources for future reference.

Lesson 2: Getting to Know InDesign

This lesson will take you through some of the foundational workflows in InDesign. You will learn how to do basic, fundamental tasks which serve as the basis for future assignments.

Lesson 3: Setting Up a Document and Working with Pages

In this lesson, you'll learn how to set up a document in InDesign using settings, parent pages, sections, and artwork.

Lesson 4: Working with Objects

You will learn how to work with layers, frames and graphics in this lesson. You'll learn what an InDesign object is and how to use those as part of your design for your projects.

Lesson 5: Working with Color

This lesson covers color management, creating color swatches, applying color to various objects, creating color groups, and creating color themes for projects.

Lesson 6: Flowing Text

This lesson goes deeper into using text as part of your design. The lesson activities will teach you all the ways you can incorporate informative, dynamic, and impactful text in your InDesign projects.

Lesson 7: Editing Text

This lesson covers more in-depth functions of text editing using InDesign. You will learn how to import text, search text, correct spelling errors and track changes.

Lesson 8: Working with Typography 

This lesson shows how InDesign offers many options to enhance the typography of your projects. You will learn how to adjust horizontal and vertical spacing of text, add shadows, and use rulers to increase the precision of your typography designs.

Lesson 9: Working with Styles

Styles are a type of visual language which can be used to apply a consistent look across many areas of your project with InDesign. Styles allow you to quickly apply a consistent method for formatting layouts.

Lesson 10: Creating Tables

This lesson shows how to use InDesign to create and edit tables. It will show you how to build a table using rows and columns, how to edit rows and columns, and how to create styles to apply to tables throughout your projects.

Lesson 11: Importing and Modifying Graphics

This lesson delves deep into using graphics with InDesign. You'll learn the difference between bitmap and vector graphics, you will import graphics, adjust graphics, and flow text around graphics. You'll also create and use a library of objects which can be saved and used for future projects.

Lesson 12: Working with Transparency

This lesson covers transparency, opacity, blending modes, feathering and other effects which can be applied to objects with InDesign.

Lesson 13: Printing and Exporting

This lesson will teach you how to check a document for potential printing issues and fix them. It will also cover how to properly check a document to ensure all elements will print as intended. You will also learn how to prepare and export a project for online and electronic publishing.

Lesson 14: Creating Adobe PDF Files with Form Fields

PDFs with fillable form fields are very commonly used across many industries and settings. This lesson teaches you how to create a PDF with fillable form fields along with buttons for submission in addition to form troubleshooting skills.

Lesson 15: Creating a Fixed-Layout ePub and Publishing Online

This lesson focuses on creating a document optimized for engagement on mobile and other electronic devices. You'll add multimedia elements, configure timing of animations, and create an ePub which you can preview in a viewing app.
