Course Overview:

Building a beautiful functioning website is more than just how it looks. It's also important to consider how easy it will be for your users to find what they want and navigate within your site. We will look at site design, content writing and navigation through the lens of usability. By the end of the course you will be able to design user-friendly and functional web sites for both desktop and mobile sites.

Curriculum Developer Biography:

Jenny Watt, MSEd in Instructional Design for Online Learning, is a certified online instructor and has been developing and teaching online courses for 13 years. Her training background includes nearly 30 years of corporate training for major companies in the Houston area. She has over 15 years’ experience in teaching at the college level and 10 years teaching at the primary and secondary levels. She has owned her own business for more than 15 years. She has experience in programming, web design, graphic design, teaching skills and business skills.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Getting Started

In this lesson we are going to look at what user-friendly web design encompasses and how the visitors to our website actually see our sites.

Lesson 2: Design and Content

The two main areas that we will focus on in making our sites usable are the overall design and the content. We will look at design elements we can use to best support the visitors to our site so they can quickly get to the information that they want to use.

Lesson 3: Things You Need to Get Right

The home page for our site is the front door of our business. We want to make sure as the users arrive, they feel welcomed and not over-whelmed and know just where they need to go to find what they want.

Lesson 4: Making Sure You Got Them Right

To make sure our site is truly usable, and not just usable to us, we will need to do some usability testing. We will look at how to design a testing plan for our site.

Lesson 5: Larger Concerns

User-friendly design does not stop with the home page on a standard browser. We will also look at making sure our site is mobile-friendly and accessible to users regardless of how they choose to view our site.

Lesson 6: Putting it All Together

In this lesson we will take a look back at what we have learned and create a usability plan for the web sites we will build.
