Course Overview:

Does your genealogy research include Civil War Ancestors? Trace an ancestor who served in the Civil War through a large variety of sources of material. Civil War records were kept in greater detail than previous wars. Confederate Soldiers groups kept much better records of the veterans after the war than the Union groups. In this class you will learn to assemble as much information about the veteran as you can from County Histories, family records and recollections of the older members of the family. Which Company formed in your ancestor's area, and how did they spend their days?

Course Outline:

• Learn the different functions in your online classroom, how it works and how to get the most out of it. In this lesson you will learn about the steps required for completing each classroom activity, from getting familiar with each lesson's content and following informative links, through the final assignment.
• To research into your Civil War ancestors, you first need some basics. Learn the many names this war might be called and get a little history on the war that pitted brother against brother.
• Figure out whether your ancestors fought in the Civil War, how to prepare for and begin your research and how to cite the resources you find so you will know where they came from in the future when you put it all together.
• Learn the military records you need to be searching for, where to look for them and how to find them.
• Find out how and where to order military service and pension records once you have gathered enough information about your ancestors.
• Figure out what some of the fraternal orders are that your ancestors might have been members of as well.
• Discover more about census records and statistical enumerations, useful tools in discovering when and where your ancestors lived, which can then help in determining if they would have been of age to be involved in the Civil War.
• Learn how the Soundex works, a way of giving numerical values to names.
• Learn some important tips to doing online genealogy research.
• Discover some useful links that will help in your ancestry searches.
• Look into some free trial offers to get information on your ancestors.
• Get familiar with one of the greatest resources for genealogy records, the Family History Library.
• Go through the Family History Library web site and learn what information is available to the public.
• Find out where a Family History Library Branch is near you.
