Course Overview:

Many years ago the competition for applications like word processors, spreadsheets and presentation applications was fierce, but today it seems like we have only one choice. NOT SO! OpenOffice is available for free and can do just about anything that the competition can do and can create, read and edit documents that can be read and edited by the other applications. In this course you will learn to use the OpenOffice Writer to create basic word processing document. You will learn to use the OpenOffice Calc to create spreadsheets and charts. You will use the OpenOffice Impress to create presentations. You will use the OpenOffice Base to create databases and mail merges.

Course Outline:

  • Students will explore OpenOffice settings and how to get help.
  • Students will use Writer to create and format basic documents.
  • Students will use Writer to tables, graphics and tables of contents to their documents.
  • Students will use Calc to create basic spreadsheets.
  • Students will add charts and filter and sort data in their Calc spreadsheets.
  • Students will use Impress to create a basic presentation.
  • Students will use Impress to create handouts for their presentations and add animation to their presentations.
  • Students will use Draw to create illustrations for their OpenOffice documents.
  • Students will use Base to create a database.
  • Students will create a final project using what they learned in this course.

Internet Connectivity Requirements:

  • Cable, Fiber, DSL, or LEO Satellite (i.e. Starlink) internet with speeds of at least 10mb/sec download and 5mb/sec upload are recommended for the best experience.

NOTE: While cellular hotspots may allow access to our courses, users may experience connectivity issues by trying to access our learning management system.  This is due to the potential high download and upload latency of cellular connections.   Therefore, it is not recommended that students use a cellular hotspot as their primary way of accessing their courses.
