Course Overview:

Linux used to be the operating system of choice for true computer geeks, but in the last few years Linux has matured into an operating system that can compete with the more popular operating systems. This course will start with installing Linux on a machine and introduce you to the graphic user interface (GUI) and the tools available there. Students will work with the command line interface and learn to manage files, write and compile programs and write shell scripts. The course will also cover some basic administrative tools like the Apache web server. Students will need a machine on which they can install Linux or a machine that is running Linux.

ATTENTION: This course has a strict start and end date.  When a student enrolls into this course, they will need to work with one of our Training Assessment Managers (TAMs) to choose a start date before they can be enrolled in their course.

Course Outline:

• You will prepare for and perform an installation of a Linux workstation.
• You will explore the X environment and the available applications.
• You will use the command prompt to perform basic Linux file maintenance commands.
• Students will identify features of the various shells available in Linux.
• Students will use the command line tools and shell commands to manage files in Linux
• Students will configure a network and work with the networking tools and applications.
• Students will perform administrative tasks, like installing software and creating backups.
• Students will explore various server applications available in Linux.
• Students will use the programming tools available in Linux.
• Students will create shell scripts.

All necessary materials are included.
