Course Overview:

This course will be discontinued from our catalog February 10, 2018.

All new enrollments will be directed to take the new CompTIA Project+ course in it's place.

Project management provides significant benefits to companies and to managers when the principles and methodologies are consistently applied. A successful project manager uses both art and science, or more succinctly, both project leadership and management. Regardless of your position in an organization, good project management skills are essential. Everyone leads projects of some type, and the principles are the same for all projects - big or small. This course will help you understand those principles and apply them in both your professional and personal life. In this course, the student will learn the art and science of leading a project and the importance of being (or having) an active sponsor. Students will learn the different steps in a project's life cycle and the keys to leading and managing a successful project. How to manage "scope creep" and how to use structured tools such as activity diagrams, project plans, charters, and GANTT charts will also be covered.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Getting Started

Projects can be small or large, long or short. Regardless, there are good project management skills that, if applied to a project, will make it successful. This lesson is an introduction to project management. We'll define a project, explore the roles different people play in a project, and look at why a project fails.

Lesson 2: Creating a Project Charter

The most important part of a project actually happens before the project begins, and that work is key to the success of the project. The charter is the formal document that reflects the agreement the sponsor, project manager, and team have come to regarding the project. Many of the projects we encounter in organizations were started without a well thought out charter, probably because of time pressures!

Lesson 3: Creating a Project Plan

Lesson 3 is where the project plan comes together. It includes the actual scheduling of a project and the development of budget estimates. At this point the direction and scope of the project is agreed upon — now we are moving into answering the "how" question.

Lesson 4: Implementing the Project!

Now all the planning is done, it's time to DO THE PROJECT! Thought you'd never get to where we would be working on the project, did you? But the project manager's job isn't over, there is still a lot of work to do. In this lesson we'll look at how one monitors progress, deals with change, and reviews the project once it is complete.

All necessary materials are included.
